"Menu Foods is paramount in the pet food recall situation that recently happened in early 2007"
Menu Foods is paramount in the pet food recall situation that recently happened in early 2007. Menu Foods was so involved in the pet food recall because they are one of the largest pet food manufacturing companies in all of North America. Menu Foods currently produces more than one billion containers of pet foods per year. For that reason, they were the largest company affected by the pet food recall. Menu Foods manufacturers products for 17 out of the top 20 pet food companies in North America. Although Menu Foods was involved in the pet food recall, it does not seem to have hurt its public image. This is likely due to the fact that the company had no knowledge of the fact the pet food was contaminated. The Pet Food Recall and Menu Foods Menu Foods began the pet food recall after more than three weeks of complaints from customers; the recall began voluntarily after a company test showed sickness and death in their test animals. A short time later, there were media reports of animal deaths as a result of kidney failure. Over the next few weeks, other companies also recalled dozens of pet food brands on a voluntary basis. It was discovered after the pet food recalls that there were two separate ingredients responsible for the illnesses in the affected animals. One of which was responsible for the animals in the U.S., while the other was responsible for the animal illnesses in South Africa. This, along with other issues, have raised concerns over the safety of food items (for animals and humans) being imported from China. Overall, 5,300 pet food products have been recalled. Menu Foods has been involved with many of the pet foods in the recall. In fact, most of the pet foods that were recalled were from Menu Foods. Throughout this process there has been a general outcry in the public to have more stringent laws put into place for pet foods. Also, although studies have shown that there is little risk for humans when they eat meat from animals that have eaten food that is contaminated with the chemicals involved with the pet food recall, consumers are still concerned and many remain unconvinced. The economic effect that this has had, particularly on Menu Foods, has been great. Menu Foods has lost an estimated 42 million dollars just on the recalled products alone. Taking into account the lost sales and bad publicity that number would likely skyrocket.
