Recently, a national recall was issued due to a pet food contamination by an industrial chemical. The recall originated with Menu pet food and went on to encompass more than 100 brands of pet food with close to 100 million units of pet food recalled. Hundreds of family pets have been sickened or have died as a result of eating contaminated Menu pet food and other contaminated products. In some cases, multiple pets in one household have been sickened, saddling the pet owners with expensive medical bills if they act to save the life of their pet.

Menu Foods is a company based just outside of Toronto in Canada. The recall of Menu pet food involved 51 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food sold throughout North America and distributed by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Safeway, and Kroger. The material believed to have sickened the animals is an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of plastics called melamine. This chemical is also used as a fertilizer in certain Asian nations. The chemical has been found in two ingredients used in pet food and imported from a manufacturing facility located in China. The contaminated ingredients that caused the Menu pet food recall were found to be rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten.

Information From The US Food And Drug Administration

The number of animals sickened by the contaminated Menu pet food is still unknown, but experts estimate the number to be in the hundreds, if not thousands, of pets. The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to the public about the dangers facing pets that consume the tainted Menu pet food and is investigating the cause of the contamination. Four other companies have also voluntarily recalled pet food that could possibly be contaminated with the substances. The recalls have cost these companies millions of dollars in revenue and have irreparably damaged the reputations of some of these companies.

The chemical that was found in Menu pet food causes severe kidney damage and possible kidney failure in the pets that consume the products. Pet owners are advised to watch for any symptoms of kidney failure, such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Pet owners are advised to seek medical attention for their pets immediately if any of these signs are observed. The contaminated ingredients are not used in food manufactured for human consumption so it is believed that humans are not at risk from these products.
