They are a huge name in wet pet foods and they are one of the main companies that had to deal with the contamination issue that plagued pet owners early on in 2007. Menu Foods Limited manufactures pet food for 17 of the top 20 largest North American retailers. It is also a contracted company to produce pet foods for five of the top six branded pet food companies in North America. Menu has plants in 3 cities in the United States and its main offices in Canada. How Menu Handled the Pet Food Recall In March of 2007, it became apparent that pets were getting sick all over North America. Rumors abounded as to the cause. Many people suspected foul play. One of the probable causes pointed to by the media was rat poison. One of the key players in the pet food recall was Menu. In March of 2007 when many animals died during quality assurance tests, Menu called for a pet food recall of over 60 million containers of their pet food. Menu was the first pet food company to recall their products. In fact, the pet food recall by Menu has been labeled as one of the largest consumer product recalls in North American history. A minimum of 471 cases of poisoning have been reported in connection with this pet food recall; 104 animals have died because of it. However, Menu Foods Limited has been credited with recalling their pet foods once it became evident that there was a problem. One of the poisons that were found in the recalled pet foods and that may be responsible for the kidney failure found in the pets affected is called aminopterin. Aminopterin is used in rat poison. Another chemical found is called melamine. Melamine is a plastic originator that can be used in fertilizer. With the many animal deaths and injuries that resulted from this situation, there has been an outcry by consumers in the United States for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate pet foods and for this regulation to be more stringent. The results of this outcry remain to be seen.
